New York, New York – March 13, 2017– ABRAMS, the preeminent publisher of illustrated books, announces the appointment of Melanie Chang to the new role of Vice President, Children’s Marketing and Publicity. Chang joins ABRAMS from Little, Brown Books for Young Readers (LBYR) division, where she was Vice President of Integrated Marketing.
Chang will oversee the marketing and publicity for ABRAMS children’s books—including its Abrams Books for Young Readers, Amulet, and Appleseed imprints—which have seen extraordinary growth over the past decade. ABRAMS publishes books for all ages and interests: from chart-topping bestsellers like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, with more than 180 million copies in print worldwide, Ada Twist, Scientist, and Me and Earl and the Dying Girl to award-winning fiction and nonfiction like Funny Bones and Heart of a Samurai to groundbreaking graphic novels like El Deafo and the Nathan Hale’s Hazardous Tales series as well as novelty books like Alphablock and In My Heart.
“With a remarkably talented publishing team working with an extraordinary array of bestselling and award-winning authors and illustrators, ABRAMS is much more than publishing house, it’s a home that I’m truly thrilled to be joining. The house is boldly and strategically moving forward to take their children’s business to new heights, and I’m exhilarated by this opportunity to further build upon their success in the marketplace,” says Chang.
Since joining Little, Brown Books for Young Readers in 2007, Chang has overseen the marketing and publicity efforts for bestselling and award-winning titles such as the #1 New York Times bestselling The Land of Stories middle grade series by Chris Colfer; The Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy by Laini Taylor; I Am Malala by Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai; and three Caldecott Medal winners: The Adventures of Beekle, written and illustrated by Dan Santat; Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World’s Most Famous Bear by Lindsay Mattock and illustrated by Sophie Blackall; and Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat by Javaka Steptoe.
Additionally, ABRAMS has hired Liz Fithian as Director, Franchise Marketing, Children’s Books, including the groundbreaking Diary of Wimpy Kid franchise. She will report to Melanie Chang. Fithian’s experience includes leading the children’s marketing departments at Macmillan and HarperCollins.
Steve Tager, SVP, Chief Marketing Officer will transition from overseeing children’s marketing and publicity to focus his attention on the marketing and publicity for the adult side, including the gift and stationery line, Abrams Plus, and the new narrative, nonfiction imprint, Abrams Press, soon to be launched.
